CONCRETE LED FACADE by Dominik Kommerell and Angela Renz.
Can a deactivated media façade transform into an architectural surface? Or phrase the question conversely – can an architectural surface temporarily become a media façade? The project offer a possible answer to these questions - the architectural surface is, when activated, a media façade that can display media content without having a persistent need for new media contents. This need is usually the result of media technology that exists as an added element onto architectural surfaces, which – when deactivated – unmasks the assembly of components. Through an amalgam of architectural surface and technology one can create an integrated media-augmented element that is able to transform either into a space-defining element or a message-delivery vehicle.
The 'Medien und Raum' Studio is a master course subject taught by Dr. Haeusler at the HfT Stuttgart - Hochschule für Technik. The Studio is part of a new research focus at the university on media architecture and interactive architecture. 'Medien und Raum' focused on the architectural integration of state-of-the -art media technology. The project 'Concrete LED Façade' by Angela Renz and Dominik Kommerell is a prototype resulting from this studio course. The project was conducted as scientific research project where conditions and materials were tested and documented. The prototype is a result of this research.
This project was presented at the MEDIA FACADES FESTVAL 2008 in Berlin.
